David Buckland

Arctic Projections and the Cape Farwell Project

David Buckland is an internationally renowned photographer, filmmaker and designer whose lens-based works have appeared in venues such as the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. He is also the founding Director of the Cape Farewell Project, which brings artists, scientists and educators together to collectively address and raise awareness about climate change.

David’s artistic work consists of films and photographs that document his experiences and connections to his colleagues and the Arctic landscape during these expeditions. In particular, he has created powerful, resonant works by filming and photographing projected text and images on melting icebergs. Some of these works can be found in his book titled Burning Ice: Art & Climate Change and his film, Art from the Arctic.

No.9 commissioned two special editions of David’s filmic work titled Cape Farewell and Sublime. No.9 applauds David’s extraordinary efforts both through his personal artistic work and the direction of the Cape Farewell Project to bring awareness to climate change. By working together, we can all play a part in bringing about the cultural shift that needs to occur to save our planet from the devastation of climate change.
