Artist Statement
Food security in the city has become increasingly precarious due to the hard-hitting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Numerous residents, especially marginalized folks, are experiencing financial hardships, leaving them unable to afford food. As a result, already strained food banks and public services are unable to keep up with the growing demands of this food insecurity. Grass roots organizations and collectives such as community fridges have risen to the challenge of fulfilling these gaps to help ensure their fellow residents and neighbours have sufficient sustenance. The kinetic interweaving fibres of the basket represents the people of our city coming together in solidarity to care for the community, pooling their shared food resources and time to create mutual aid for all. The work is an ode to these grassroots collectives who are working together to create a kinder city where no neighbour is left hungry. This is a call to action to support community collectives by volunteering and donating food resources. Food is nutrition. Food is energy. Food is a right. Food is life.
