Artist Statement
Keeping a sustainable and healthy city means showing up as a citizen for your communities, and neighbourhoods. Active citizens breathe life into the environments we live in and help to create safe spaces for all and push for radical sustainable change so that our cities can have brighter futures. This piece was particularly inspired by folks working to create radical change in our cities through acts of social justice, mutual aid, public art, and urban planning. I was inspired by the folks who go out of their way to help those in need and act as a voice for the underrepresented when their needs fall on deaf ears. Public art and urban planning also inspired me when working on this piece. Using public art as a tool to push forward progressive community projects can shed a light on the spaces in our cities needing more attention, which in turn allows urban planners to help rejuvenate and revitalize these spaces for a more sustainable future.
